State and Science: Astronomy in Northern Song China. Astronomy was of high political importance in ancient China. Professor Sun Xiaochun, Institute for the History of Natural Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, will talk on Northern Song China (960–1127) and the unprecedented achievements in astronomy due to the sustained support that the imperial state afforded as well as how the political nature of astronomy sometimes made it impossible for astronomers to make genuine innovations.
