One of Gilbert & Sullivan’s most accomplished and entertaining works, the story is set in the fictional Japanese town of Titipu, in which flirting is a capital offense. The Mikado tells the story of a wandering minstrel who falls in love with the fair Yum-Yum, who just so happens to be engaged to the town’s newly appointed Lord High Executioner. A deliciously intelligent satire, the Japanese setting allowed Gilbert and Sullivan to slyly mask their commentary on contemporary British society. Our colorful reimagining of this surprisingly modern tale of star-crossed lovers updates the traditional silk kimonos of ancient Japan with vibrant Harajuku fashions, and a wild, punky mix of colors and styles. Ensemble features actors grades 4 – 8.
